Check Out The Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk

Posted by

Hey what’s up guys, It’s Brian from We Like L.A. and we today are in bustling Downtown Los Angeles and we are going to check out the DTLA Art Walk. Let’s see what it’s all about. The Downtown Los Angele Art Walk is a free self-guided tour of galleries predominantly located on Spring and Main between 2nd and 9th St in DTLA. The Art Walk takes place, rain or shine, on each second Thursday of the month. Start at Art Walk visitor center, which pops up at 634. Spring starting around 6 p.m. It’s a good spot to get your bearings and grab a map of what’s to see. Dozens of galleries, vendors and venues participate, with each Art Walk Night featuring specially curated exhibitions. And who knows, you might even end up becoming part of the art yourself! After touring a few of the galleries we headed over to the Fine Arts Building to talk Qathryn Brehm, the Executive Director the Art Walk. She gave us a little background and context for the event, plus a few reasons why YOU might want to check it out for yourself. It’s a great place to come with your friends and just enjoy a time. It’s a free, self-guided tour so that right there is very important for Los Angeles to come and see the rest of your city. Art Walk started about 12 years ago and it started with just a few galleries open at one point. A couple directors, a couple artists decided let’s take the second Thurday of the month and let’s start inviting our friends and people who love art to come join us and have some fun. For a lot of young people it’s the first cultural experience. They may not feel comfortable going to a gallery but when you come to Art Walk it’s just very diverse and very open. My background is as an artist so the curator here invited me to do something for the show. So I thought about it, I’ve been Downtown for so many years, since 1979 actually. So I was going to do something, but I thought I’m just going to celebrate the artists. Some of the artists, just a few of the artists, that have painted the pictures, paid their rent, and supported the arts for all these years. And this now, Los Angeles is an international cultural destination so these are some of the people here tonight that have made that happen. As a bonus, if you decide to experience Art Walk I definitely recommend stopping by the Last Bookstore at 5th and Spring. Not only does it have one of the coolest spaces in L.A., but often times they’ll have events or concerts going on in conjunction with Art Walk. Alright so that’s it, that our trip to the Downtown Art Walk. Hopefully you guys are feeling a little bit inspired and you’re going to take your next second Thursday and visit it for yourself. Remember if you’re watching on YouTube I’m going to leave some helpful links and information in the description below. And as always if you want to see more videos like this be sure to like, subscribe and comment. Anyway that’s it for today. Hope you guys enjoyed. Until next time, I’ll see you later.
