A CLOSING CALL FOR TEENS ON THE WATER IN LONG ISLAND AS FLAMES BREAK OUT ON THEIR BOAT SUDDENLY. GOOD EVENING, I’M DICK BRENNAN IN FOR MAURICE DuBOIS. WELCOME BACK TO THE BROADCAST. I’M KRISTINE JOHNSON. THE BOYS WERE IN THE GREAT SOUTH BAY LAST NIGHT WHEN THE BOAT’S ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. THEY WERE RESCUED BY THE COAST GUARD. CBS 2’S CAROLYN GUSOFF JOINS US NOW FROM THE COAST GUARD STATION ON FIRE ISLAND WITH THE STORY. CAROLYN. Reporter: GOOD EVENING. IT WAS A NIGHTTIME OUTING THAT TURNED INTO QUITE A SCARE FOR FIVE TEENAGERS AND THEIR PARENTS VERY WORRIED AT HOME. THE KIDS SAW FLAMES COMING FROM THEIR BOAT ENGINE AND THAT’S WHEN BOATING SAFETY TRAINING KICKED IN. I WAS TRACKING THEM ON MY iPHONE. I SAW HIM IN SHALLOW WATER STUCK. Reporter: THOMAS CLARSON FROM DIX HILLS GOT ON THE PHONE WITH HIS SON. HE AND FRIENDS RAN INTO SHALLOW WATERS NEAR ROBERT MOSES CAUSEWAY BRIDGE. THE ENGINE GETTING ALARMINGLY HOT. HE IS LIKE, DAD, YOU KNOW, IT’S HOT. IT’S STUCK. AND HE GOES, OH, NO! I SEE FIRE! Reporter: HE INSTRUCTED THE TEENS TO ESSENTIALLY ABANDON SHIP. I GO, GET THE LIFE JACKETS IMMEDIATELY, GET IN THE WATER. NOTHING ELSE. Reporter: THEN HE CALLED 911, STEPS OF THE COAST GUARD SAID WERE EXECUTED PERFECTLY. BEING THERE WERE FLAMES AND THINK OF LIFE VESTS AND SHALLOW WATER IT WAS THE BEST THING THEY CAN JUST WALK RIGHT OFF AND STAY NEARBY. Reporter: COAST GUARD RESCUERS FOUND THE FIVE TEENS IN THE DARK IN WAIST HIGH WATER WITH THE HELP OF NIGHT VISION GOGGLES, A POLICE CHOPPER AND THE BOYS’ SMARTPHONES ON FLASHLIGHT MODE. I COMPLIMENTED THEM ON THEIR ACTIONS TO GET THE iPHONE OUT. IT’S NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE SEEN IT BUT EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS ESPECIALLY IN THE DARK NIGHT. Reporter: THE BOYS 14 TO 19 YEARS OLD BROUGHT SAFELY TO SHORE WHILE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DOUSED THE FLAMES. ITS CHIEF GETTING A THANK YOU FROM THE BOAT OWNER. THE FIRE NEVER SPREAD BUT OFFICIALS SAY IT CERTAINLY COULD HAVE. A LOT OF GAS AND FUEL INSIDE THE BOAT SO IT COULD EXPLODE. Reporter: THE 27-FOOT SPEEDBOAT IS DRY-DOCKED. ITS ENGINE DESTROYE CLARSON AND SAID HIS SON AND FRIENDS ARE EMBARRASSED BUT THEY DID EVERYTHING RIGHT. I’M BLESSED, JUST GLAD THEY ARE ALL RIGHT. Reporter: THIS IS A GOOD TIME TO REMIND BOATERS TO ALWAYS HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER ON BOARD. THIS BOAT DID HAVE ONE BUT THE FATHER SAID, THEY WEREN’T TAKING ANY CHANCES. AND COAST GUARD OFFICIALS AGREE, THEY SAY THEY DID THE RIGHT THING. THIS IS A TEXTBOOK RESCUE. LIVE IN BABYLON, LONG ISLAND,
