MILITARY OVER THE PAST YEAR OVER SEAS. A SOLDIER PROTECTS YOUR COUNTRY. NOBODY KNOWS BETTER THAN SEVEN-YEAR-OLD ALEXANDER. MY DAD’S A VETERAN. HIS FATHER IS AN ARMY STAFF SERGEANT. HE’S BEEN DEPLOYED OVER SEAS FOR A YEAR. DO YOU MISS YOUR DAD WHEN HE GOES TO WORK? YEAH. BUT LITTLE DID ALEXANDER KNOW THAT WHILE HIS SECOND GRADE CLASS WAS GETTING A LESSON IN COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP, HIS DAD, A VERY SPECIAL COMMUNITY LEADER HIMSELF WAS WAITING IN THE HALL TO FINALLY REUNITE WITH HIM. STAFF SERGEANT, JUAN. [ APPLAUSE ] AS HIS CLASSMATES AND TEACHERS ERUPTED WITH APPLAUSE, ALEXANDER FELL INTO HIS DAD’S ARMS. I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT FOR THE LONGEST. I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT TO HEAR WHAT HIS SON HAD TO SAY. I WAS STANDING OUTSIDE AND HEARING HIM TALK ABOUT THE MILITARY. MY DAD’S A VETERAN. FOR HIM TO KNOW THAT — WHAT A VETERAN IS BASICALLY. IT’S A PROUD MOMENT. TO MAKE SURE THE HOMECOMING WOULD BE A SURPRISE, THE SERGEANT TOLD HIS SON AND HIS WIFE DIANA THAT HE WOULDN’T BE HOME UNTIL APRIL. I’M HAPPY. VERY HAPPY. HAPPY TO HAVE BOTH HER BOYS BACK TOGETHER WITH NO CHANCE OF LETTING THEM GO ANY TIME SOON. NO. NOT ANY TIME SOON. NO. AS FOR ALEXANDER, HE HAS BIG PLANS FOR WHEN THE FAMILY GETS HOME. MAYBE I COULD WRITE A WELCOME BACK CARD TO HIM. WITH THIS PICTURE PERFECT MOMENT IN MIND. THE SECOND GRADERS ALSO GOT A CHANCE TO ASK THE SERGEANT ALL SORTS OF QUESTIONS ABOUT
